about

In the early 90's before the internet became so ubiquitous if you wanted a mixtape you had to go to the flea market, swap meet or corner store (and risk being shot, but it was worth the risk). Mixtapes back then were just that, cassette tapes mainly (then the single track CD debuted in the flea market in the mid ninties). I used to go to a flea market in Richmond, Virginia on Midlothian Turnpike (that flea market is a church now, how things change). Joe, the guy that ran the mixtape booth near the rear of the flea market on the right, would see me coming and start pulling out the music he knew I was hunting for. People loved Kid Capri, DJ Clue, Whoo Kid, Envy, Green Lantern and all the DJ's that would spin unreleased new music and had exclusive freestyles. But I personally was a fan of a brand of mixtapes called Blends. These mixtapes were where a DJ would take acapellas of hip hop, RnB, Rock, Pop … anything, and dropping other hot beats under them; sometimes two or three different beats per acapella. Joe would line up the Selecta Bam Bam, Doggtyme and Ron G tapes, all of which were incredible but my favorite hands down was DJ Juice. I would buy DJ Juice mixtapes without even giving them a sample listen, and they were ALWAYS the business.
Recently on Insta I was listening to @Angela_btdubs do some live blends on her page and it reminded me of how amazing the blends mixtapes used to be. So I grabbed some hip hop, pop, 90's RnB, 80's soft rock, 80's pop rock and reggae and spun a homage to the flea market mixtapes. So here it is Goode Goods 11: Blended Family.
